Myanmar's Misery

In 2005, the ruling generals of Myanmar moved their capital from Yangon to Naypidaw probably after receiving advice from fortune-tellers who foretold that there would be revolt and disaster in Yangon.

The revolt was staged in last September by monks in saffron robes. It was suppressed easily by an army with little qualms of shooting at unarmed protestors. Now natural disaster came and on an unimaginable scale. Tens of thousands have been killed, many were left without shelter and most of the survivors were at risk of disease and hunger.

The junta, military government of Myanmar under General Than Shwe, unlike the uprising were slow to response to the disaster that killed many of its own people. Soldiers were missing from the disaster-hit areas until much later. The junta again displayed their incompetence by delaying foreign aid from pouring into the country.

What is wrong with these people?

First, even after India informed Myanmar authority 2 days in advance that the cyclone would hit Maynamar inland, the inept government just briefly announced it over the stations and did nothing to evacuate nor prepare its people for nature's wrath.

Second, even after the disaster struck, instead of heeding the cries of the needies who were affected by the cyclone, the junta still decided to go ahead to hold a referendum on a new constitution. What for? Just to safeguard their own power?

So much has been said. It's sad that such things are happening in the world due to greed and selfishness of human beings.

At the end of this, let's just hope that Myanmar would be able pick itself up as soon as possible and its government would come to some good sense to deliver its people from suffering and most important of all, its incompetence.

In the tempest's wake, this is a futile call.
