First They Killed My Father

Hi all! Daniel Chin here and i would like to share with everyone a book that caught my eye. It is a book told through the voice of a young and fearless Loung. I only read the 1st chapter though which is a brief introduction about life in Phnom Penh.

Already at 6a.m. the city is bustling with activities. I doubt most of you guys wake up that early on weekends, right? By midday, temperatures there climb to over a hundred degrees! The streets go quiet again as people rush home to seek relief from the heat, have lunch, take cold showers, and nap before returning to work at 2p.m.

There are no traffic lights there. Imagine that in Singapore! We would never have peace from the horning of cars. People in Phnom Penh like to get around the city in cyclos. A cyclo resembles a big wheelchair attached to the front of a bicycle.

The author is a girl but does not behave like one. Her mother is always trying to teach her how to walk like her a lady but she never gets it right. According to her mother, a propr lady walks like this. First, connect your heel to the ground, then roll the ball of your feet on the earth while your toes curl up painfully. Finally you end up with your toes gently pushing you off the ground. All this is supposed to be done gracefully, naturally, and quietly. Whoa! I didnt know a proper lady has to go through so much pain just to take a step.
This is a great book.Hope you enjoyed the introduction!
