From 2008, Regional Studies Programme (RSP) will be offered to Sec 1 students. RSP will have the following features:
• Students in the RSP will offer Bahasa Indonesia (BI) as a third language. To encourage students to offer BI,
- Two bonus points will be given to BI students who obtain a grade of A1-C6 for the subject;
- BI can be counted in-lieu-of a humanities subject in their L1R5 score.
• Up to 100 scholarships will be awarded per cohort of students across the four schools. The scholarships will cover a school fee subsidy, an annual allowance
of $1000 per annum and sponsorship for regional immersion programme.
• RSP curriculum will include overseas immersion programmes and structured enrichment modules spread out during the course.
What is the difference between RSP and MSP?
Besides offering MSP or Bahasa Indonesia as a third language, students in the Regional Studies Programme will also learn about Southeast Asian culture and
contemporary society to gain
a better understanding of the cultural and social aspects of the region.
There will be a school-based module on “Understanding and Appreciating Southeast Asia”. We will organize
other enrichment activities such as cultural camps, seminars and immersion programmes to neighbouring countries to deepen their understanding of the region.
Who is eligible for the RSP Scholarship?
• For outstanding students who are Singapore citizens enrolled in the Regional Studies Programme:
- Bahasa Indonesia as third language
• Students who show keen interest in Bahasa Indonesia and in learning about Southeast Asian culture and contemporary society
• Achieve excellent overall academic results
• Exhibit scholarly qualities including leadership and other personal qualities
What is the difference between an RSP scholar and a non-scholar?
• Scholarship allowance of S$1000 per annum
• At government or government-aided schools – waiver of school fees (Scholars will continue to pay all other fees such as miscellaneous and autonomous fees, if any)
• Funding for up to 1 month of immersion in Malaysia or Indonesia (onshore costs only) for the whole course
- Includes accommodation costs and meals
- Excludes daily spending, visas, insurance and international flight(s) airfare costs
• Scholarship subject to yearly renewal based on academic results
What are the terms of the RSP Scholarship?
Not all RSP students are scholars.
An RSP scholar will receive a scholarship of $1,000 per year and sponsorship for regional immersion programmes. The scholarship will include subsidy of
school fees. The non-scholar will not be receiving these provisions and the immersion programme is optional for him.
Is there a bond for the RSP scholarship?
No, there is no bond tied to the RSP scholarship.
Can PRs qualify for the scholarship?
The scholarship is for Singapore Citizens only.
What is the language proficiency level of students completing Bahasa Indonesia at ‘O’ level?
At the end of the 4-year course, BI students should be able to:
• Understand standard spoken ML in daily conversation;
• Converse on daily issues;
• Read and understand issues in news reports such as Berita Harian;
• Write on matters pertaining to daily issues; and
• Understand and appreciate everyday practices that are part of the Malay culture.
