Saman Dance from Aceh

Saman dance, also known as ‘Thousand Hands,’ originates from Aceh. This dance, which is popular and well-known abroad, is usually performed to celebrate the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad and other important occasions. Eight to twenty female/male performers kneel in a row on the floor and make different kinds of torso movements accompanied by songs, clapping hands, slapping chests, slapping hands on the floor, etc. The songs sing praises to Allah or they can be prayers too. Saman dance starts normally slow and then increases its tempo gradually to great speed and finally come to a sudden stop.

Watch this clip performed by students of this university and see if we can emulate them.

Enjoy.
